At the ongoing Indian Mobile Congress, Reliance Jio successfully demonstrated its Satellite-Based Fiber Broadband service called JioSpaceFiber. Moreover, it is also India’s first satellite-based giga-fibre broadband. This will connect areas with poor or no network to the internet with fibre-like speeds.
Reliance Jio launches satellite-based fibre broadband service JioSpaceFiber
The company has partnered with Luxembourg Société Européenne des Satellites (SES).
They did this to access their Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites O3b and O3b mPOWER.. These will provide satellite-based fibre internet services. Additionally, many believe that it is the only MEO constellation that can provide fibre-like broadband services from space. Also, SES currently has over 70 satellites in two different orbits.
They also stated, “SES is the only company that offers game-changing technology, providing scalable and affordable broadband across all of India with a level of guaranteed reliability and service flexibility that is a first in the industry.”
“Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With Jio SpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected. Jio SpaceFiber will allow everyone, everywhere, to fully participate in the new digital society with gigabit access to online government, education, health, and entertainment services,”Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited
According to the company, JioSpaceFiber will be available across the country at highly affordable prices. Moreover, JioSpaceFiber is already available in four of the remotest locations in India. This includes Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC Jorhat in Assam. However, Reliance Jio has yet to reveal the release date as well as the pricing plans.
JioFiber vs Jio SpaceFiber
JioFiber has enabled millions of Indians to experience giga-fiber broadband speeds. This service is available almost across all the cities of India, which is quite a great feat. However, many remote locations like small villages or forest-covered places are still not connected. Jio SpaceFiber can bypass JioFiber’s restrictions and reach these remote locations without the need for too many wires. Jio SpaceFiber may be the 1st in India but we have had similar satellite-based broadband services. For example, there’s Elon Musk’s Starlink and also the awaited Airtel’s OneWeb.
