If you use a Nokia or HMD feature phone for UPI payments, there is an important change to know about.

GS Pay or GupShup Pay, the UPI service used on supported feature phones, is being discontinued. PhonePe is now taking its place on compatible devices.

The transition has already started on some 2G feature phones, while support for 4G models is expected through software updates. (Rollout Started)

PhonePe Is Replacing GS Pay on Feature Phones

GSP Pay support was originally scheduled to end on August 1, 2026. However, the PhonePe app was not ready on supported devices by that date. Because of this, GSP Pay support was extended until September 1, 2026.

The change means feature phone users will eventually move from GSP Pay to PhonePe for UPI payments. This is an important shift because GS Pay was one of the services that made UPI possible on basic keypad phones without Android or iOS.

Which Nokia Phones Already Have PhonePe?

Some newer feature phones have already started shipping with PhonePe installed.

The Nokia 123 Shield, launched in India on August 13, 2026, came with PhonePe support. The Nokia 300 Charge, which arrived on September 6, also included the PhonePe app.

This means newer stock of supported phones can have PhonePe ready from the start. Older stock may still come with the previous GS Pay setup, so checking the software and UPI support before buying is important.

The PhonePe update is rolling out to 4G feature phones as well. (Software version: 17.03.17.02)

  • Nokia 3210 4G
  • Nokia 235 4G
  • Nokia 220 4G

Can Existing Nokia Feature Phones Get PhonePe?

If an existing supported phone doesn’t have PhonePe yet, a software update may be required.

For the 2G models listed above, the update isn’t available online. Instead, users can visit an HMD service center and ask whether the PhonePe software is available for their device.

Another option is to contact HMD support and check whether the PhonePe update is available for a particular model.

What About New Nokia Feature Phones?

If buying a new Nokia or HMD feature phone, checking the box and software version is worth doing before completing the purchase.

Newer stock of supported models should include PhonePe, while older stock may still have the previous GS Pay setup.

Retailers may have both versions depending on when their inventory arrived. So, if UPI support is one of the main reasons for buying the phone, confirming PhonePe support is a good idea.

What Feature Phone Users Should Do Now

There is no need to immediately replace a working phone just because GSP Pay is being discontinued. If the device is supported, the PhonePe transition should provide the replacement UPI service.

For 2G users, checking with HMD support or visiting a service center can confirm whether the update is available. For 4G users, keeping the phone updated is the main thing to watch.

The important part is making sure PhonePe is available before relying on the phone for UPI payments again.

The Move From GSP Pay to PhonePe Is a Big Change for Feature Phones

UPI has become an important part of everyday payments in India, and feature phones have helped bring that convenience to people who don’t want a smartphone.

Replacing GS Pay with PhonePe keeps that option alive on supported devices. The rollout is still being expanded, so compatibility will depend on the phone model and its software.
